Africa & Diaspora inside the 159 documentary features submitted for 2019 OSCAR® Race

One hundred fifty-nine features have been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category for the 92nd Academy Awards®, in LOS ANGELES, California.

Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying releases. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category's other qualifying rules in order to advance in the voting process.

Among them, 2 majors African documentaries: "Buddha in Africa" by South African director, Nicole Schafer, and "Talking about Trees" directed by Suhaib Gasmelbari (Sudan).

"Talking about Trees" follows Ibrahim, Manar, Soliman and Eltayeb, four Sudanese filmmakers and close friends since more than 45 years, who try to inspire the love of cinema in a wounded country. One of their last heroic acts is to resuscitate a cinema theatre in Khartoum, Sudan.

"Buddha in Africa" highlights the personal story of a teenager growing up in a Chinese Buddhist orphanage in Malawi and the challenges he faces between his African roots and Chinese upbringing.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a global community of more than 9,000 of the most accomplished artists, filmmakers and executives working in film. In addition to celebrating and recognizing excellence in filmmaking through the Oscars, the Academy supports a wide range of initiatives to promote the art and science of the movies, including public programming, educational outreach and the upcoming Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is under construction in Los Angeles.
