FIFTH EDITION FESTIVAL CINEMA ARABE!

From the 8th until the 26th of May 2013 the fifth edition of Festival Cinéma Arabe will take place. With more than 30 feature films, documentaries and short films by international filmmakers with an Arab background, the festival presents an overview of contemporary film production from countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine and Lebanon.

In the festival programme, attention is given to films that portray the current developments in the Arab world. Special dramas, surprising debut films and discerning documentaries clarify what the demonstrations and revolutions have meant for the people there and how the Arab Spring has brought about undeniable change.

A second theme running through the programme is the perception in the West about the Arab world, and vice versa. Taboo-breaking films and intriguing documentaries give an insight into otherwise closed communities and provide a refreshing look at life and relationships within the Arab world.

In Festival Cinéma Arabe there are not only beautiful films on the programme, but also special music. At the invitation of the festival, the acclaimed duo Christian Boissel and flamenco star Rocío Márquez are coming to the Netherlands for the European premiere of the music programme Arabesques. With poems by Federico García Lorca, Boissel (piano and composition) and Márquez (vocals) will bring an ode to the Arab-Andalucian period. On 14 May they appear in the large hall of Paradiso, Amsterdam, on 15 May they perform in the Verkadefabriek and on 16 May they kick off the four-day festival in LantarenVenster, Rotterdam. Prominent music journalist Peter Culshaw labelled their performance at the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music as ‘…the highlight of the whole festival' (Songlines magazine, Aug/Sept 2012).

Festival Cinéma Arabe will take place in Rialto (Amsterdam), Lantaren Venster (Rotterdam), Filmhuis Den Haag (The Hague), De Verkadefabriek (Den Bosch), Lumière (Maastricht) en't Hoogt (Utrecht).

The majority of films has English subtitles.

VIJFDE EDITIE FESTIVAL CINEMA ARABE!

Van 8 tot en met 19 mei vindt de vijfde editie van Festival Cinéma Arabe plaats. Met meer dan 30 speelfilms, documentaires en korte films van internationale filmmakers met een Arabische achtergrond biedt het festival een overzicht van de hedendaagse filmproductie uit landen als Egypte, Marokko, Tunesië, Palestina en Libanon.

In het festivalprogramma wordt aandacht besteed aan films die de huidige ontwikkelingen in de Arabische wereld in beeld brengen. Aan de hand van bijzondere drama's, verrassende debuutfilms en nijpende documentaires wordt inzichtelijk gemaakt wat de demonstraties en revoluties voor de mensen daar heeft betekend en hoe de Arabische Lente ontegenzeglijk verandering teweeg heeft gebracht.

Een tweede thema dat als rode draad door het programma loopt is de beeldvorming in het westen over de Arabische wereld, en vice versa. Taboedoorbrekende films en intrigerende documentaires tonen een inkijkje in anders gesloten gemeenschappen en bieden een verfrissende blik op het leven in en de verhoudingen binnen de Arabische wereld.

Festival Cinéma Arabe programmeert niet alleen mooie films, maar ook bijzondere muziek. Op uitnodiging van het festival komt het spraakmakende duo Christian Boissel en flamencoster Rocío Márquez naar Nederland voor de Europese première van het muziekprogramma Arabesques. Aan de hand van gedichten van Federico García Lorca brengen Boissel (piano en compositie) en Márquez (zang) een ode aan de Arabisch-Andalusische periode. Op 14 mei staan zij in de grote zaal van Paradiso, Amsterdam, op 15 mei treden ze op in de Verkadefabriek en op 16 mei geven ze de aftrap voor het vierdaagse festival in LantarenVenster, Rotterdam. Vooraanstaand muziekjournalist Peter Culshaw bestempelde hun optreden op het Fès Festival of World Sacred Music als ‘…het hoogtepunt van het hele festival' (Songlines magazine, Aug/Sept 2012).
