Celebrating Med Hondo's cinema with a film program-cum-exhibition-and-workshop from August 19 to September 10, in Berlin.
„Lauf Genosse, die alte Welt ist hinter Dir her"- so die deutsche Übersetzung des Programmtitels - ist einer der Slogans der französischen 68er-Bewegung, der in SOLEIL Ô (1969) Eingang gefunden hat, dem wohl bekanntesten Film des in Mauretanien geborenen und seit nunmehr 50 Jahren in der Pariser Banlieue lebenden Avantgarde-Filmemachers, Schauspielers und Synchronsprechers Med Hondo.
Absicht ist dabei, geografische, motivische und sensorielle Verbindungen, die Nähe zu Abstraktion und Sound punktuell hervorzuheben und den Widerhall von Med Hondos Kino-Kosmos zu amplifizieren, der über die mauretanisch/ algerisch/west-saharischen, burkinischen, malischen, karibischen und Pariser Filmschauplät-ze und seine Herkunft hinausgehen.

Cours, cours, camarade, le vieux monde est derrière toi aims to celebrate Med Hondo's cinema with a film program-cum-exhibition-and-workshop from August 19 to September 10. The program's goal is to acknowledge his work as a filmmaker, actor and dub-voice, and to make a younger generation of video- and film-artists engage with it. Hondo's experimental cinema since the 1970's onward is a lively and unique reflexive practice on forced and desired mobility: migrant labor, colonial occupations, enslavement and their historiographies that entangle the African continent with Europe and the Americas. His films draw their power from counter-movements and articulate a universalism "from bellow."
Today Med Hondo's films are of great importance for they never fit simple categories. Their cinematic space is one of traversing and creating relations instead of a territorial occupation, be it in a cinematic, a cultural or a political framework. All films will be introduced by international guests, and discussed with the audience.
Exhibition (Arsenal, silent green Kulturquartier, Archive Kabinett, Arsenal, Savvy Contemporary) including works by Sebastian Bodirsky, Kudzanai Chiurai, Theo Eshetu, Suhaib Gasmelbari and Guy Woueté. Openings: August 19 to 22 including presentations and artists talks.
A three days workshop (silent green Kulturquartier & Archive Kabinett, September 1 to 3) is planned to reflect Med Hondo's cinematic practice and geographical parameters thus engaging with a new type of referential system that transgresses national determinations and fixed cul¬tural definitions. All events are in English, film languages may differ. Das Projekt wird gefördert im Fonds TURN der Kulturstiftung des Bundes. Dank an Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin, Goe¬the-Institut Yaoundé, Archive Kabinett, SAVVY Contemporary und silent green Kulturquartier.
Le projet se résume en 5 volets: une exposition, un programme de films suivis d'un atelier/workshop, une publication (digital et papier) et la tournée des films. Nous travaillons encore sur quelques contours du programme mais il est quasi-définitif.
