Né en exil en 1967, Zola Maseko a étudié au Swaziland et en Tanzanie, puis à l'école nationale de film et de télévision en Grande- Bretagne. Parmi ses courts métrages, il a signé "l'Étranger " (1997) et " A Drink in the Passage " en 2003, largement primé. Il a aussi dirigé une série en neuf parties pour la SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) intitulée "In Search of our Roots" (A la recherche de notre histoire).
Il a obtenu l'étalon d'or du Fespaco de Ouagadougou en 2005 avec "Drum" (2004). Son dernier film, THE MANUSCRIPTS OF TIMBUKTU (2009), a gagné le Walter Mosley Award, au Real Life Documentary Festival, Ghana.
EN 2014, il lance l'adaptation du roman de Zakes Mda: THE WHALE CALLER.
